Let’s talk about booklet
Booklet’s Big Story is my second Capstone project at Champlain College’s game studio. It’s a children’s game about an empty storybook searching for their own story. That’s a pretty simple premise, but I knew from the outset that I wanted it to carry real emotional weight. Booklet’s going to tackle some big feelings!
My place in this story
Despite the project being developed over the span of one year, I was only brought on as Lead Narrative Designer six months into production. My team had already established the basic premise: A little book named Booklet has no story, and that will not do! They needed me to expand on this wonderfully cute, but ultimately hollow plot.
Writing with Empathy
I wanted Booklet to struggle with emotions that an eight-to-ten-year-old could understand. Feelings of unbelonging, imposter syndrome, and uncertainty are explored through a full, multi–act structure. It’s a big story; Booklet encounters several influential figures that shape the trajectory of their self-discovery, for better or for worse.
